Lutheran Summer Music (LSM) is the nation’s premier faith-based music academy for high school students. In addition to advanced musical instruction and numerous performance opportunities, LSM students form an intentional community, living together for four weeks on a Lutheran college campus.
Since 1981, this unique and immersive program has guided the lives of young musicians, who credit LSM as the starting place for their future careers and vocations.
I’m honored to serve as a Guest Artist this year, collaborating with LSM clergy and faculty to lead music for daily liturgies and work with students.
I'll be sojourning with the congregation for the months ahead as they search for a new musician. During this focused season of listening and reflection, we will explore ways music and liturgy can be creatively integrated within worship, share music from a variety of congregational song traditions, and reflect on singing as a spiritual practice.

I'm excited to be on teaching faculty from July 18 to 25, and again serve as guest musician from July 25 to August 1. It will be a joy to collaborate with fellow leaders and learners to make a memorable two weeks!
I’ll join The Rev. Miranda Hassett, musician Deanna Clement, and the St. Dunstan’s community for a lively weekend of singing, learning, reflection on practices that strengthen and enrich congregational singing. I’ll work with the choir, offer a Friday evening Community SING, lead a Saturday workshop, and share in worship leadership on Sunday.
I'm excited to spend a weekend at Southwood Lutheran Church, sharing paperless (oral/aural tradition) music and leadership practices! We'll join voices and hearts in song, sharing in worship, communal learning, and reflection on the spiritual practice of singing.
I'll share worship leadership at Vanderbilt Divinity School, inviting the students, faculty, and staff to spaces of learning and singing in community.
9:30am-11am “Engaging Voices, Spoken and Sung” (Suite 119, with Worship Committee and open to the community)
11:15am-12pm Worship (The Space, Paul will lead us in music)
1:15-2:25pm “Creative Ideas for Proclaiming Sacred Texts” (G-43, Prof. Budwey’s Intro to Worship class and open to the community)
The sessions will explore the use of paperless music in worship and the varied applications of oral tradition learning and how it can be used to strengthen congregational singing and deepen into spaces of embodied, communal song (within and outside church).
As we look to songs of the past and music of today, what do they have to teach us about the power of music to shape congregational life, especially our worship? Join us for a lively time of singing and reflection!
I’ll be in residence at Valley Presbyterian Church in Portola Valley, CA for three weeks, inviting congregational reflection, leading worship, and offering a workshop for the congregation and surrounding community.
I'll serve as interim/transitional musician at Park Avenue Christian Church from early February until the summer, directing the choir and organizing a team of musicians to lead a multilingual, intersectional, and theologically progressive worshipping community in New York City.
The work includes:
- bringing more consistent thematic unity and focus to worship, especially in expressions of sung prayer and praise;
- continued integration of music from varied musical traditions and styles, including African-American, African, Latinx, and other global sources;
- training and mentoring music leaders in practices that engage and strengthen congregational participation;
- continued modeling of healthy, clear communication patterns between music staff and church staff, including planning processes and procedures that help alleviate anxiety and last-minute changes.
