pray with our feet update
I’m grateful to share my protest song Pray With Our Feet is being sung around the country - from Washington, D.C. to Iowa to California. I continue to offer it for free, with hope the piece inspires courageous action to end gun violence in the United States.
The song was used at United Methodist Women education and training events this spring and summer and I’m deeply indebted to my colleague, Jorge Lockward, who arranged a keyboard accompaniment, offered thoughtful performance notes, and even wrote additional verses.
It’s not enough—To care for just one day
It’s not enough—to cry and lament
It’s not enough—to criticize and blame
It’s not enough—to watch the news and weep
It’s not enough—to cry out for peace
It’s not enough—to talk when talk is cheap
It’s not enough—to feel deep in your heart
It’s not enough—to help here and there
It’s not enough—to give your pocket change
Susan Peck, a songleader in Albuquerque, New Mexico wrote inviting me to consider alternate lyrics to include folks who might be in wheelchairs or otherwise unable to physically walk in the streets. In her community they sang, ‘we’ve got to pray with our mouths, pray with our feet, pray with our wheels, and get out, out on the street.’
It’s amazing to see a song take on a life of its own, adapted for different spaces and needs. Please write to share your experiences with the song and, above all, let your singing support bold, non-violent action to end gun violence!
